The princess turned 5 this weekend. I braced myself for this milestone birthday but didn’t prepare for a call from my parents who had her the night before saying they were taking her to the ER and that she was having trouble breathing. It flooded us with worry since we knew that another respitory issue would be the last straw before she needed to be tested for Cystic Fibrosis. We tried to shy away from the diagnosis but 3 bouts of pneumonia, bronchitis and croup all within 9 months seemed to be pointing in that direction. So, I stayed home from work and went back and forth of whether we should cancel her party. In the end we still had the family over but my emotions were on total overload. Maybe it was pregnancy, maybe it was the mama bear in me but when my brother in law said he couldn’t risk his kids getting sick and that he didn’t think he was bringing his boys up, I lost it. I tried to call him back and got his voicemail and basically cried my eyes out and begged him not to disappoint Alaina on her birthday. She wasn’t contagious and with all of the medical worries we were stressing about….I just couldn’t bear having her suffer. I know they thought I was nuts and a few hours later they did come. I wanted to explain it all then but knew I couldn’t without breaking down.
Even though her little party was small she still had a great time. I finished her High School Musical knot top in just a knick of time and made her a little mini cake and star cakes.

and of course she got gifts!

She didn’t act sick the whole day. I was so proud of her for being a trooper even though she had to slow down when she had trouble breathing. So, bright and early on Monday morning we went to the dr and were thrilled to find out that it is not CF, but it is Asthma. So, now she will be a girl with the epi pen and the inhaler. Which made me cry again. It isn’t the end of the world, I just can’t believe for almost 8 months we have had so many chronic respitory issues and worries about the worst case scenarios and all of it was potentially caused by untreated asthma?! I just wish that they could have considered this months ago and maybe just maybe we could have saved her from a lot of pain.
I am so blessed to have such an amazing little girl, I just want her to be happy and healthy!

and in case that didn’t give you a good idea of much that is I took, I took a pole and a put it in the middle of this mound of snow and measured it and the tally as of 11:45 am and after 28 hours of snow we now have…..drumroll please….

Not exactly how I planned spending my birthday but definitely memorable! Thankfully we have groceries and my work was cancelled for this evening so we are home for the night. Join me later for a family game night and a piece of my birthday cake, german chocolate, YUM!
The weekend long birthday extravaganza for Alaina’s 4th birthday has come to a close. You have never seen a child so excited for a party. This was the first big event since Christmas that she has understood and has gotten excited for. She woke up on Saturday and walked in my room and I said, “Happy Birthday, Princess” and I had no way to prepare myself for what she did next. She burst into tears and jumped up in the bed and into my arms. I stared into her teary blue eyes and she told me that she missed being 3. No amount of convincing how great being 4 was when she realized her party wasn’t until the next day and the waterworks continued. I think she assumed the party was like Christmas and that she would be able to wake up and BAM! it would be party time. Patience is a big lesson for a little kid. But, by the end of the day and a trip to the Target dollar spot proved to put a smile on her face.

Yesterday, we had her party which ended up being a crossover of two themes. She couldn’t decide if she wanted to be a pirate or a princess so we had a pirate and a princess party. The whole family played along and wore our silly pirtate hats and let her be the true princess of the day. Even I jumped on the pirate ship and wore a hat! (you can even see the new hair do and color underneath my hat)

A party would not be complete without cake and presents. Especially when it involves an ice cream cake to which no one in my house can resist!

As the party was coming to a close and the treasure hunt was over and the little ones were back to playing Princess Alaina made one more birthday wish with her wand in which she tried to make a rainbow. No one could have ever guessed that the sun would have peeked out from the afternoon of rain to deliver this gorgeous rainbow.

When everyone left I pulled Alaina up into my lap and asked her if she enjoyed her birthday and she enthusiastically said that she couldn’t wait to turn 5. (Trust me beloved, mommy can wait a year…three went by way to fast!) I asked her what her favorite part was and she looked at me so innocently and said her birthday rainbow. I told her that God makes rainbows and that they were a promise from him just like he gave to Noah. To which my sweet child looked at me and said, yes but this rainbow was made by my magic wand and birthday wish. I decided that maybe it was best to leave that argument alone and let her go to bed knowing all of her birthday wishes came true.
